Stavatti Receives Design Patent For SM-31 Stiletto

On 23 June 2020 Stavatti was awarded the design patent for the SM-31 Stiletto by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent number assigned to the design patent is US D887,949 S.
The SM-31 Stiletto is Stavatti’s next generation Advanced Supersonic Trainer (T/T-X) and Light Fighter (LF). Addressing a need for a 5th generation supersonic training aircraft by allied air forces worldwide, the Stiletto will be produced in both a two seat tandem advanced trainer configuration (SM-31T) and a single seat light fighter configuration (SM-31S). A high performance, low observable design with forgiving flight characteristics, the SM-31 draws from a global need to replace T-38 Talon, F-5 Freedom Fighter and MiG-21 Fishbed aircraft with a sophisticated, more efficient and more effective successor. Offering greater safety, reliability and capability than its predecessors, this new aircraft is a clean-sheet-of-paper aircraft . Featuring distinct low-observable styling, planform alignment, a 2-D thrust vectoring nozzle and a V-tail, the SM-31 is a novel design that qualified for a distinct design patent.
Powered by a single Honeywell F125-GA-100, F125X or F125XX afterburning turbofan, the SM-31 will be equipped with F-16 style flight grips, reclined Martin Baker MK18 ejection seats, a glass cockpit with Large Area Active Displays, a Canopy Embedded Display, HOTAS and integrated avionics. Benefiting from Electromechanical and Electrohydraulic actuators for primary control functions, the Stiletto will be an all-electric, Power-By-Wire (PBW) aircraft. Constructed from aluminum lithium and titanium and featuring aluminum lithium honeycomb sandwich skins, the Stiletto features a low observable, planform aligned configuration. With in-flight refueling capability, integrated avionics and 9-g plus maneuverability with standard air-to-air intercept stores, the Stiletto will be available in advanced trainer configurations without radar, as well as fully-equipped fighter variants with compact AESA radar and a comprehensive EW/Self Protection Suite. As a warfighter, the SM-31 is equipped with an internally mounted 20mm cannon and has both an internal weapons bay to carry two AIM-9X class AAMs as well as up to six external stores hardpoints to carry up to 7,000 lbs of external ordnance. Future SM-31S Stiletto fighters will feature proprietary Directed Energy Weapons for combat as well as active defense against missile threats.
The only truly next generation supersonic trainer under development today, the Stiletto can provide both advanced flight training, supersonic training, dissimilar air combat training and stealth aircraft engagement training. Stavatti Submits Bid to Acquire Piaggio

On 29 May 2020 Stavatti submitted an Expression of Interest for the purchase of the business units of Piaggio Aero Industries S.p.A. in a.s., and Piaggio Aviation S.p.A. in a.s. The Stavatti bid included the purchase of both business units of Piaggio including the business complexes of Piaggio Aero Industries at Villanova d’Albenga. The bid was submitted to Mr. Vincenzo Nicastro,The Extraordinary Commissioner.
The proposed acquisition of Piaggio will be implemented in two rounds including a “Round A” Acquisition and Purchase and a “Round B” Investment and Recovery. Round A will consist of the purchase both Piaggio Aero Industries and Piaggio Aviation and the assets thereof in their entirety from the current owner(s) thereof assuming full right and title of all assets. In Round B Stavatti will invest directly into the recovery and business development of Piaggio Aero Industries and Piaggio Aviation. The Company will function as the Piaggio Division of Stavatti Aerospace or “Stavatti-Piaggio” and will focus on the development, certification and production of new variants of the Avanti as well as new design Stavatti civil and military aircraft.
The combined Round A and Round B bid presented by Stavatti is on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars, subject to the completion of a comprehensive due diligence investigation of Piaggio by Stavatti as well as the arrival of mutually agreeable terms.
Stavatti has developed a comprehensive Recovery & Development Plan for Piaggio that focuses on the expanded production of the Avanti Evo as well as new derivatives and variants of the Avanti as well as new design Piaggio and Stavatti aircraft and powerplants. Stavatti leadership shall establish a management organization that will be located in Italy to focus upon restructuring and production re-start with an initial focus upon immediate production of current configuration aircraft to meet immediate outstanding orders and backlog.
Investing directly in the expansion of the business, Stavatti will focus on the upgrade/modernization of the P.180 Avanti with respect to avionics, displays, powerplant, systems, interior styling and incorporation of advanced aluminum alloys and production techniques to improve performance and reduce production costs and labor intensity. New variants of the Avanti that Stavatti will oversee the development, certification and production launch of will include turboprop, electric/hybrid electric and turbofan configurations. Long term strategic plans include the production of next generation Stavatti military aircraft to satisfy the needs of the Italian Air Force as well as regional NATO/Allied Air Forces as Stavatti-Piaggio aircraft. Serving as Stavatti’s military aircraft manufacturing center in Europe, future Stavatti-Piaggio aircraft may include the SM-28 Machete Close Air Support (CAS) Aircraft, the SM-36 Stalma Multi-Role Fighter and the SM-39 Razor Air Dominance Fighter.
In addition to aircraft, Stavatti-Piaggio will also focus on the Development and Production of next generation aero engines for the regional NATO/allied market including the production of new design Stavatti-NeoThrust variable cycle turbofans, including afterburning turbofans for the SM-36 and SM-39 aircraft. Production of new Stavatti turboprop and reciprocating engines will also be conducted by Stavatti-Piaggio.

Stavatti Responds to USSOCOM Armed Overwatch Program

On 1 May 2020 Stavatti submitted a response to Phase 1: Request For White Papers for the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Armed Overwatch Program Other Transactional Authority (OTA) Agreement for a Prototype Project, Solicitation Number H92408-20-OTA-ARMEDOVERWATCH. The Stavatti submission, which included an 8 page White Paper accompanied by Attachment E: Offerer Certifications and Disclosures as well as Attachment D: Supplier Response Template, proposed the SM-27T Turboprop Machete as a potential multi-domain solution to the USSOCOM Armed Overwatch requirement.
The Armed Overwatch Requirement specified a need for up to 75 Fixed or Rotary Wing Armed Overwatch Aircraft to fulfill Close Air Support (CAS), Armed Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR), Strike Coordination & Reconnaissance (SCAR), and Forward Air Control (FAC) roles. Stavatti response outlined how Stavatti has the capability necessary to meet the Armed Overwatch requirement within USSOCOM’s time-frame without causing an unacceptable delay in meeting and exceeding the needs of the warfighter.
The proposed offer of SM-27T Machete aircraft to USSOCOM includes 75 new aircraft. Aircraft delivery can begin in 2023 will full delivery of all 75 aircraft by 2027. The aircraft was offered at an average unit flyaway cost of between $15 Million and $20 Million each, depending upon USSOCOM selected sensors, avionics and electronic warfare systems. The 75 aircraft as proposed may accompanied by a support package including spares, ordnance, ground support, training and maintenance. In full compliance with the Buy American Act, the SM-27T will be produced in the USA with all systems and components produced in the USA with exception of the PW150 derivative turboprop powerplant and MX-10D/MX-15D Electro-Optical Sensor both of which will be produced in Canada in accord with USA/Canada defense trade agreements.
A two seat tandem, single engine turboprop CAS and Attack Aircraft, the SM-27T is intended to address anticipated future CAS and attack aircraft needs of both the USAF and NATO/Allied Air Forces. The SM-27 is designed to serve as a successor to attack aircraft including the A-10 Warthog, Su-25 Frogfoot, A-1H Skyraider, Super Tucano ALX, AT-6 Wolverine, OV-10 Bronco, A-37 Dragonfly, IA-58 Pucara and other attack aircraft. The SM-27 is a three surface aircraft featuring a moderate aspect ratio wing, canard foreplanes, twin vertical stabilizers and an all moving horizontal tail. With a maximum level speed of 400 Ktas, the SM-27 is armed with a 30mm cannon and will carry up to 8,000 lbs of ordnance over 2,000 nm.
Now under development by Stavatti as a privately funded, commercial program, Stavatti is undertaking a $400 Million investor funded development program including a $50 Million prototype and flight test centric Demonstration and Validation (Dem/Val) program and a $350 Million Full Scale Development (FSD) Program. The development effort will result in FAA type certification, DoD Military Qualification and Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP). The SM-27 is now being developed exclusively in the USA and Stavatti has selected a production site in the USA to serve as home to the Machete family production line. Stavatti projects producing between 50 and 100 SM-27s annually depending upon global customer needs and aircraft demand.

Stavatti Responds to USAF LAA Presolicitation

On 17 August 2018 at 11:55 PM Eastern Time Stavatti submitted a response to the USAF Light Attack Aircraft (LAA) Presolicitation. The Stavatti submission was in response to Solicitation Number FA8637-19-R-1000 and requested that Stavatti Aerospace Ltd be permitted to submit a response to the USAF LAA Request For Proposals (RFP) that is anticipated to be released in December 2018.
The Stavatti Presolicitation response included an 80 page document entitled SM-27 Machete USAF LAA Presolicitation Response 17 Aug 2018 which presented the Stavatti SM-27S/T Machete Turboprop Close Air Support (CAS) as an alternative LAA solution to the proposed aircraft offered by Textron Aviation and Sierra Nevada Corporation. Arguing that the SM-27 Machete represents an “A-1 Skyraider” class attack aircraft, the Stavatti response provided detailed technical and projected performance information for the SM-27 as well as Flyaway Cost and Cost Per Flight Hour Estimates.
A single engine Close Air Support (CAS) and Attack Aircraft, the SM-27 is intended to address anticipated future CAS and attack aircraft needs of both the United States and NATO/Allied Air Forces. Powered by a 4,000 SHP turboprop, the SM-27 is a three surface aircraft featuring a moderate aspect ratio wing, canard foreplanes, twin vertical stabilizers and an all moving horizontal tail. With a maximum level speed of 400 Ktas, the SM-27 is armed with a 30mm cannon and can carry up to 8,000 lbs of ordnance over 2,000 nm. Featuring an F-16 style, all-glass cockpit that incorporates F-16 flight control grips and reclined Martin Baker Mk16 ejection seats, the SM-27 will be produced in single seat attack (SM-27S) and two seat tandem attack/lead-in Fighter (SM-27T) configurations. With in-flight refueling capability, integrated avionics and 9-g plus maneuverability in the clean-configuration, the turboprop Machete will be available in basic configurations without radar, as well as fully-equipped variants with AESA radar and a comprehensive Gen 4 or 5 EW/Self-Protection Suite.

Stavatti Announces New Military Aircraft Lineup

Stavatti Aerospace Ltd. announces a new military aircraft lineup of current production and new design military trainer, attack, and fighter aircraft for the next decade. From the current production SM-95 Lasta to the new design SM-39 Razor, scheduled for first flight in 2027, the lineup provides a comprehensive air defense solution for U.S. allied air forces worldwide.
Building upon Stavatti’s April 19th Agreement on Strategic Partnership and Long Term Business and Technical Cooperation with JugoImport-SDPR, Stavatti is introducing current production as well as upgraded versions of past production Serbian/Yugoslavian aircraft as part of the immediate Stavatti product line. These aircraft, including the SM-95 Lasta, SM-96 Super Lasta SM-4/SM-5 Super Galeb and SM-22 Super Eagle, build on the proven Lasta 95, G-4 Super Galeb and J-22 Orao and will be manufactured to Stavatti specifications at the aircraft production center in Pancevo, Serbia for worldwide export.
The SM-95 Lasta is now in production and can satisfy immediate needs for military basic trainers. To address near-term light attack and COIN requirements, Stavatti will produce the SM-96 Super Lasta as a light attack variant of the SM-95. To address advanced flight training, the Super Galeb will enter production as the SM-4 and the SM-5 Super Galebs. To satisfy near-term strike and attack aircraft needs, Stavatti will introduce the SM-22 as a new production, proven affordable combat aircraft with new avionics and sensors.
Potentially addressing future USAF Light Attack and Close Air Support needs, Stavatti has introduced the SM-95 Lasta and SM-4 Super Galeb as aircraft that could now participate in the Capability Assessment of Non-Developmental Light Attack Platforms to USAF Point of Contract Patrick Kelleher. Stavatti can also offer the SM-96, SM-5 and SM-22 as potential alternative Light Attack and CAS solutions to the USAF.
To address next-generation trainer, attack, and fighter needs, Stavatti’s military aircraft lineup includes the new design Javelin, Machete, Stalma, and Razor aircraft now under development. The Stavatti Javelin will be produced in both supersonic trainer (T-X) and Light Fighter (LF) configurations to provide a comprehensive, low- observable T-38/F-5 successor. To address tomorrow’s Close Air Support needs, Stavatti is continuing development work on the Turboprop SM-27 Machete and Turbofan-powered SM-28 Machete. Building on the Machete family, the SM-47 Super Machete will be produced as a readily exportable, supermaneuverable Air Defense Fighter. To address sixth generation fighter requirements, Stavatti is reintroducing the SM-36 Stalma as a reimagined, low observable, super maneuverable Multi-Role Fighter scheduled for first flight no later than 2024. Stavatti and Jugoimport Enter Into New Aircraft Development Agreement

Stavatti Aerospace Ltd. and Jugoimport-SDPR J.P. entered into an Agreement today to develop and produce a new single engine aircraft. This aircraft will be produced at the UTVA aircraft factory in Pancevo, Serbia and exported worldwide.
This Agreement is the first Addendum to the Agreement on Strategic Partnership and Long Term Business and Technical Cooperation that was entered into on April 19th. The Agreement was signed by Christopher Beskar for Stavatti and Aleksandar Lijakovic for Jugoimport-SDPR in Belgrade.

Stavatti Enters Into A Strategic Partnership with Jugoimport-UTVA

Stavatti Aerospace Ltd. entered into an Agreement on Strategic Partnership and Long Term Business and Technical Cooperation with JugoImport-SDPR J.P. and its sister company, aircraft manufacturer UTVA Avio Industrija d.o.o. on April 19th in Belgrade.
Key terms of the Agreement include:
• Joint reimagining, modification, upgrade, certification, and production of aircraft developed and produced by UTVA and other local aircraft manufacturers connected to Jugoimport/UTVA
• Joint development and production of new Stavatti aircraft, powerplants, and aircraft systems
• Aircraft, airframe structure, aircraft subsystem, powerplant, and component production for Stavatti and Stavatti aircraft at the UTVA production plant
Under this agreement, Stavatti will serve as a production partner capable of producing aircraft, airframe structures, aircraft components, systems, and powerplants from both the 925,000 sq. ft. UTVA aircraft factory in Pancevo, Serbia, as well as the related aerospace-defense manufacturing facilities of Jugoimport-SDPR. In so doing, this agreement provides both the capabilities and capacity for Stavatti Aerospace Ltd. and its sister company, Stavatti Industries Ltd., to immediately expand into development, production, and global marketing of a wide range of related aerospace defense systems including airframe structures, actuators, landing gear systems, tires and brakes, ejection seats, powerplants, rockets and missiles, artillery systems, tanks and armored vehicles, small arms, ammunition, defense infrastructure, and comprehensive systems support and training.

Stavatti Submits Javelin T-X In Response To USAF APT RFP

Stavatti Aerospace submitted the new and re-imagined Javelin T-X as a candidate solution for the USAF Advanced Pilot Training (APT) Family of Systems (FoS) Program (T-X). The second of two proposed aircraft to satisfy the T-X requirement, the Stavatti proposal was submitted to PCO David Speed at AFLCMC/AQH yesterday prior to the 1 PM Eastern deadline.
Offered at a per unit flyaway cost of $10 million, the Javelin T-X is the most affordable entry in the T-X competition. The total cost for the Javelin T-X solution for 351 aircraft, 46 ground-based training systems, contractor logistical support, and aircraft engineering manufacturing development/qualification is under $4.7 Billion.
The Javelin T-X is an all-new supersonic trainer design derived from the twin engine ATG Javelin that first flew in 2005. The single engine aircraft is powered by the Honeywell F125 afterburning turbofan and offers a maximum level speed of Mach 1.5 and a stall speed in the landing configuration of 95 KTAS, giving the Javelin T-X the greatest endurance per pound of fuel compared to any other aircraft yet offered as a T-X solution. With a maximum gross takeoff weight of 12,500 lbs, 176 sq. ft. of wing area and area ruling, the Javelin T-X is an homage to the original T-38/F-5.
With a high degree of planform alignment and 2-D thrust vectoring, the Javelin is also the only T-X candidate with low observability in mind. While not necessary for the APT mission, the Javelin will also be produced as a Very Light Fighter (VLF). Armed with two internally carried AIM-9X Sidewinders, an internal gun (or directed energy weapon), and fitted with both a compact AESA radar and a comprehensive electronic warfare suite, the Javelin VLF will introduce a new era of highly affordable fifth generation fighters. Built for 9 Gs at MTOW and offering standard in-flight refueling capability the Javelin meets or exceeds all APT FoS RFP requirements.
Designed entirely in the U.S., Stavatti is moving forward with Javelin T-X development as a private venture funded through risk investor and strategic partner support. First flight of the Javelin T-X conformal prototype may be as early as 2018. If selected by the USAF for the APT requirement, the first Javelin T-X will be delivered as an EMD aircraft in 2019. With five planned EMD aircraft, Low Rate Initial Production will begin in 2024, followed by Full Rate Production in 2026. Stavatti will produce 48 aircraft per year for the USAF followed by additional VLF aircraft annually to meet potential allied export fighter needs.
The Javelin T-X will be built at a Stavatti center in the United States and will directly employ approximately 800 persons for at least two decades. Locations under consideration for Javelin T-X production include Arizona, California, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
Stavatti Submits SM-47 T-X In Response To USAF APT RFP

Stavatti Aerospace submitted the SM-47 T-X as a candidate solution for the USAF Advanced Pilot Training, Family of Systems Program (T-X). The first of two proposed aircraft to satisfy the T-X requirement, the Stavatti proposal was submitted to PCO David Speed at AFLCMC/AQH before 11 AM eastern time.
The SM-47 T-X is a supersonic, Advanced Pilot Trainer variant of the SM-47 Super Machete family of Multi-Role/Air Defense Fighter aircraft now under development by Stavatti. Tailored specifically for the T-X mission, the SM-47 design was improved beginning in 2014 to ensure that the cockpit accommodates JPATs cases 1-8. Featuring aluminum and titanium foam metal sandwich construction, the SM-47 T-X will be powered by a single GEAE F414 enhanced performance afterburning turbofan. The SM-47 will be the first U.S. production fighter to feature a Forward Swept Wing (FSW), made possible in part by the stiffness associated with titanium foam metal sandwich structures.
A super-maneuverable aircraft, the SM-47 T-X will offer a maximum level speed exceeding Mach 2.2 and a limit load factor at gross weight of 9.0 G. With in-flight refueling capability as a standard feature, the SM-47 T-X may be readily converted to the Air Defense Fighter (ADF) configuration for DACT missions, offering a maximum external warload of 12,000 lbs carried on a total of eight external stores stations.
A member of the Machete family that includes the SM-27 Turboprop and SM-28 Turbofan Close Air Support (CAS) aircraft, the SM-47 is being developed as part of a Stavatti initiative to provide a modular FoS to address future Attack, Fighter, and Trainer needs. The USAF would achieve a significant cost savings by selecting the SM-47 for the T-X role and the SM-27 or SM-28 for the budding OA-X requirement, thus deploying a common modular and affordable solution to a variety of air defense needs.
Offered to the USAF T-X program office at a per unit flyaway cost of $20 Million, Stavatti’s total bid for the T-X program including 351 aircraft and 46 Ground Based Training Systems (GBTS) was approximate $8.4 Billion.
Designed domestically by Stavatti, the Machete family will be prototyped and produced in the United States. If selected, the first SM-47 T-X prototype would fly in 2018, with delivery to the USAF in 2019. With five planned EMD aircraft, flight testing certification to MIL-HDBK-516B standards will be achieved by 2022 with Low Rate Initial Production beginning in 2024 followed by Full Rate Production in 2026. Stavatti would produce 48 aircraft per year for the USAF followed by additional SM-47S/T fighter variants annually to meet potential allied export needs.
The Stavatti SM-47 program, in conjunction with the SM-27 and SM-28, will directly employ approximately 2,000 persons for at least two decades. Locations under consideration for Machete series production include Arizona, California, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Stavatti Aerospace is entering the Javelin into the USAF Advanced Pilot Training Program (T-X) competition.
The Stavatti Javelin is a new twin-engine, two-seat, high performance military jet trainer and Very Light Fighter (VLF) aircraft. Derived from the ATG Javelin Mk-30, the Javelin will be a candidate for the USAF T-X trainer requirement, as well as a trainer and VLF that can be sold to allied air forces worldwide.
The Javelin project began in 1998 with the formation of Aviation Technology Group (ATG) in Englewood, Colorado. Intended as a two-seat civil jet sportplane, the original ATG-1 Javelin mockup was unveiled and displayed at the NBAA convention in 2002. With orders for 151 aircraft by 2003, in 2004 ATG announced a partnership with Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) to develop and produce a family of two seat military jet trainers designated the Javelin Mk-20 and Mk-30. The prototype Javelin had its maiden flight on 30 September 2005. In December 2007 ATG ceased business operations after failing to raise additional development capital, ultimately declaring bankruptcy in 2008.
On 14 November 2016 Stavatti Aerospace Ltd was granted an Exclusive License to re-imagine, develop, prototype, certify, manufacture, sell, and support the Javelin as an Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) and VLF from the present owner of the Javelin project’s intellectual property and physical assets.
Upon execution of the licensing agreement, Stavatti immediately began redesigning the Mk-30 Javelin configuration to directly address the current USAF T-X RFP requirements as issued on 31 December 2016. The Stavatti Javelin maintains many exterior characteristics of the original Javelin design but benefits from structural improvements to increase maximum load factor to 9-Gs, more powerful engines, greater internal fuel capacity, increased maximum external warload, higher maximum takeoff weight, a cockpit designed for the T-X mission that satisfies JPATs flight crew accommodation cases 1-8, and a maximum level speed of Mach 1.36. The result is a very affordable, next generation supersonic trainer.
Stavatti is now building the Javelin Industry Team and may partner with a larger prime contractor to expand the Javelin program’s ability to provide comprehensive manufacturing, training, and contractor logistical support to satisfy T-X requirements.
Stavatti will be releasing technical information regarding the reimagined Javelin beginning March 1st followed by a formal response to the USAF T-X RFP on March 30th.
Stavatti Introduces Reimagined SM-26 Sleek Sportplane

On June 10th Stavatti Aerospace introduced a new configuration for the SM-26 Sleek series of high performance sportplanes and military trainers. The announcement included the release of the new Sleek series concept, as well as SolidWorks CAD models, arrangement drawings, specifications and performance data and preliminary product linecards. Concept development work for the new Sleek series began in April 2016. Focused upon updating, renewing and revitalizing the design, the new Sleek is no longer a derivative of the Machete, but is instead a unique aircraft designed from-the-ground-up that provides the same look and feel as the Machete. Although sharing a common appearance with the Machete, it is distinctly different, being physically smaller at approximately 2/3rds the size of the Machete.
Intended to serve as a 2/3rds scale Machete demonstrator as well as a high performance sportplane, the Sleek serves as a “replica” Machete for the civil market. Providing a true military fighter feel in a general aviation sized package, the Sleek will be produced in a variety of FAA FAR Part 23 variants including the SM-26, SM-26A, SM-26B, SM-26C and SM-26T. The SM-26 will serve as a single engine, two seat tandem general aviation sportplane. Powered by a 750 hp Trace Supercharged V-8 engine, the SM-26 will be a very fast, very capable, high performance general aviation aircraft. The only light plane on the market to provide an F-16 style cockpit with Recarro seats, the SM-26 is being sized to compete effectively with Lancair and Cirrus Performance Aircraft while offering distinctive comfort and style.
A next generation aircraft with a host of advanced features, the SM-26 will introduce a novel Fly-By-Wire (FBW) flight control system to general aviation. The SM-26 will have an empty weight of 2,550 lbs and a 3,700 lb MTOW resulting in a useful load of 1,150 lbs. SM-26 maximum level speed is projected at 330 KTAS at altitude. With a maximum range in excess of 1,100 nm, the SM- 26 will takeoff and land in less than 1,100 ft.
The SM-26T is Stavatti‘s Basic Trainer. The SM-26T military trainer benefits from a 750 hp, super- charged Trace V-8 engine driving an 8 ft diameter, 5-blade scimitar propeller. With an empty weight of 2,630 lbs and 3,700 lb MTOW, the SM-26T offers a 58 KTAS approach speed, a maximum level speed of 330 KTAS and a 5.5 hour endurance. A basic trainer, the SM-26T is designed to safely perform a litany of standard maneuvers including stalls and spins and will receive FAA FAR Part 23 certification. With a low operating cost, ejection seats, retractable landing gear and a fighter-feel, the SM-26Tis an affordable basic trainer.
The SM-26A is an advance Light Attack (LA) aircraft. Retaining the basic SM-26T airframe, the SM-26A is powered by the same 750 hp supercharged Trace V-8 engine. Featuring a standard Sleek trainer cockpit, the SM-26A is also equipped with tandem ejection seats with a stepped arrangement to permit the flight instructor to scan over the student’s seat. The SM-26A has a 3,170 lb empty weight, a 7,500 lb MTOW and the ability to carry up to 2,500 lbs of external stores on eight underwing hard-points for weapons training and light attack. With a 48 lb/sq ft wing loading, the SM-26A will offer a stall speed of 57 KTAS and a maximum speed of 326 KTAS. Maximum SM-26A rate-of-climb is 3,500 ft/min rising to a 39,000 ft service ceiling. Designed for a 7.5-g load factor at MTOW, the SM-26A will be FAR 23 certified and fully aerobatic.
Designed as a 21st century successor to the Pilatus PC-9, T-6A Texan II, AT-6B and EMB-314 Super Tucano, the SM-26T will compete directly with the PC-21. Suitable as a 21st century JPATs successor, the SM-26T exceeds the performance of the T-6A/T-6B while offering the COIN/Light Attack capability of the AT-6. Stavatti Aerospace has begun advanced design of the Sleek Series. Able to serve as a direct competitor to the T-6A and PC-21 at a lower flyaway cost than the SM-27, the Sleek will satisfy a nice market which evolved Machete configurations presently outclass. Stavatti anticipates the advanced design of the reimagined Sleek will be completed by 2017.
Stavatti Releases New Machete Development Program Plan

On May 2nd, Stavatti Aerospace released a new Development Program Plan for the Machete Family of Next Generation Close Air Support (CAS), Counter-Insurgency (COIN), Forward Air Control (FAC) Air Defense Fighter (ADF), Advanced Trainer (AT) and Advanced Pilot Trainer (APT) aircraft. The new development plan is summarized in the proprietary document SM-27/SM-28 Machete & SM-47 Super Machete Development Program Overview. The new Machete Family Development Program focuses upon the Demonstration and Full Scale Development of three Machete variants (the SM-27S/T Turboprop, SM-28S/T Turbofan and SM-47S/T Super Machete) over a comprehensive 60-month program. A privately funded, corporate initiative to address anticipated next generation military aircraft needs, this new Machete Development Program Plan calls for the roll-out of SM-27 and SM-28 series prototypes in 2018 with Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) beginning in 2019. SM-47 series prototypes are expected to roll-out in 2019 with LRIP beginning in 2021. Full Rate Production (FRP) for the SM-27 Turboprop and SM-28 Turbofan Machete is expected to begin in 2020/2021 with SM-47 Super Machete FRP scheduled for 2021/2022.
The Machete Development Program has a total cost of approximately $1.75 Billion over 60 months including $400 million to develop the SM-27S/T, $600 Million to develop the SM-28S/T and $750 Million to develop the SM-47S/T. A modular airframe based upon a common core, significant cost sharing will be employed throughout the Development Program, thereby reducing total program costs. A commercial initiative, the Development Program will begin with a $25 million Demonstrator Program whereby non-conformal prototypes of the SM-27 will be produced to validate the Machete series airworthiness and military utility. Similarly, the Demonstrator Programs for the SM-28 and SM-47 will cost $50 Million and $75 Million respectively. It is anticipated that throughout the Demonstrator Program Stavatti will receive sufficient orders from customers as to achieve a significant production backlog. The receivables associated with this backlog will ultimately allow Stavatti to secure the private sector capital necessary to complete Full Scale Development (FSD).
FSD will result in the production, flight-testing and qualification/certification of conformal Production Representative Test Vehicles. While a portion of Machete Development Program costs will be funded by private financial sources, Stavatti anticipates that principal Machete program costs will be financed through customer orders and direct program participation in the form of RDT&E contracts. Stavatti projects a potential market for 3,000 Machete aircraft over the next 20 to 30 years including: 1,000 SM-27S/T Turboprop Machetes for CAS/COIN/FAC/AT, 1,000 SM-28S/T Turbofan Machetes for CAS/FAC/AT and 1,000 SM-47S/T Super Machetes for ADF/APT.
Stavatti Responds to USAF Next Gen TACAIR CRFI

On December 17th, 2010 Stavatti Aerospace submitted a White Paper in response to the Next Generation Tactical Aircraft (Next Gen TACAIR) Capability Request For Information (CRFI) issued by the USAF-Aeronautical Systems Center, ASC/XRS, 2275 D Street, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7224. The Stavatti response was a 21-page submission discussing concepts for a next generation Air Superiority Fighter.
The Stavatti Air Superiority Fighter (ASF) is a 6th generation aircraft that will be introduced by 2025. Designed to address US and international allied market needs, the ASF is intended for export to nations that presently operate F/A-22 and F-15 aircraft. The ASF will directly satisfy any USAF requirement for a Next Gen TACAIR for operation within the 2020-2050 time-frame. Envisioned as an F/A-22 successor, Stavatti has road-mapped an ASF program plan whereby development will start before 2020 with IOC beginning between 2025 and 2027.
The Stavatti ASF will be developed as either a program sponsored by the US DoD in support of a formal USAF or USN requirement, or as a privately funded, commercial initiative focused upon Direct Commercial Sales to domestic and allied customers. The ASF will be a twin-engine, manned or unmanned, low observability aircraft with super-cruise, super maneuverability and short-field capability. The ASF will be an airbreathing aircraft designed to operate within the stratosphere. The aircraft will be designed for all-weather supersonic flight at high and low altitudes. Primary mission capabilities include: Air Superiority, Air Intercept and Combat Air Patrol. Secondary mission capabilities include First-Day-Of-War Precision Strike, Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses, Reconnaissance and Close Air Support.
Emphasis is placed upon a high performance aircraft, with high acceleration, climb and turn rates with exceptional maneuverability to fulfill both close-combat, dogfight and Beyond Visual Range roles. The ASF is designed specifically to counter threats posed by current 4th and future 5th and 6th generation Chinese and Russian fighters including the Su-27, Su-30, Su-33, Su-35, PAK FA/T-50, MiG-35, J-10, J-11, J-20 and J-XX. A successor to F/A-22, F-15, MiG-31, Typhoon and Rafale aircraft, the ASF will compete internationally with other new 4th and 5th generation fighters now under development including the Mitsubishi ATD-X, Korean Aerospace KF-X and India’s AMCA.
ASF concept definition began in 2009 and will continue until the beginning of vehicle Advanced Design. All conceptual design has been performed using baseline requirements established by Stavatti to develop an aircraft that will exceed F/A-22 capabilities and provide a significant edge over potential threats during the 2020-2050 timeframe Stavatti has assigned ASF program concepts three different model numbers: The SM-39, the SM-49 and the SM-88. These model numbers represent distinct approaches to the ASF. The SM-39 is a fixed-wing ASF, where the SM-49 is a variable geometry swing-wing aircraft. The SM-88 is a variable geometry oblique-wing aircraft. Stavatti is producing a number of concepts for each of the three aircraft models from which a final configuration will be selected to represent the specific model type.

Stavatti Responds to Future Vertical Lift (FVL) RFI

On August 14th Stavatti Aerospace submitted a response to the Future Vertical Lift Science & Technology Initiative, SOL # OF071320090930 Sources Sought/Request For Information. The ten-page response was submitted to the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, Office of the Director, Defense Research and Engineering for the Department of Defense.
The Future Vertical Lift (FVL) solicitation was released for the purpose of improving government understanding of emerging technology capabilities and stakeholder strategic direction for future vertical lift aircraft and rotorcraft. The Stavatti response focused upon a discussion of next generation vectored thrust VTOL technologies. The response also provided an overview of the Stavatti SM-57 VTOL Nextgen Tactical Airlifter.
The SM-57 is a high performance, Low Observable, VTOL air mobility concept. An all-weather, day or night operations aircraft, the SM-57 will feature a unique configuration that combines three fuselage elements with a tandem wing of cranked W planform. Capable of delivering payloads up to 48,000 lbs, cargo will be contained within two wing-tip mounted pods offering a total volume of over 23,000 cu ft and 1,470 sq ft of useful floor. The SM-57 will carry up to 150 troops or 128 paratroops or 80 medical litters or 10 463L pallets or 2 AH-64D Apaches or 6 HMMWVs.
The SM-57 will be powered by three enhanced GEAE CF6 turbofans. To achieve VTOL, the powerplants are arranged in a three-poster configuration and equipped with articulated, variable geometry axisymmetric thrust vectoring nozzles. The SM-57 is a FVL concept which employs next generation Vectored Thrust Technologies to achieve VTOL capability. Although a next generation aircraft, the SM-57 will benefit from Military and Commercial Off-The-Shelf Technologies (MOTS & COTS) to result in an integrated FVL solution that is low risk yet high value. The SM-57 is envisioned for the 2025 time-frame.
Stavatti Responds to USAF APT FoS-2nd Request

On Tuesday, September 8th Stavatti Aerospace submitted a 78-page formal response to the Advanced Pilot Training (APT) Family of Systems (FoS) Request For Information-Second Request. The response was submitted to Michael R. Dudley, Chief-Capabilities Development Branch, ASC/XRSC, 2275 D Street, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7224.
The APT FoS RFI-2nd Request was a “continuation of a market research effort being conducted by Aeronautical Systems Center (ASC) to collect information on high-performance, two-seat military jet trainer aircraft and ground-based training systems to include full-fidelity simulators, courseware and other virtual/computer based training applications…The United States Air Force is conducting market research to identify potential sources that possess the expertise, capabilities, and experience to meet the requirements of the future Advanced Pilot Training (APT) Family of Systems (FoS). Due to the age of the T-38C, as well as the long lead time required for a major aircraft acquisition program, Air Education and Training Command (AETC) began the acquisition process for replacement of the T-38 training FoS in the fall of 2003. The T-38 training FoS is currently expected to be the Advanced Trainer for the Fighter/Bomber (F/B) APT track until at least 2017. The Air Force will conduct an Analysis of Alternatives to examine the most cost effective approach to replacing the T-38 training FoS. The current desired timeline is to field a replacement APT FoS with an Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in the 2017 timeframe. Initial Operational Capability (IOC) is defined as sufficient assets available to start the first class in training using exclusively the assets of this FoS. Planning IOC is Q4 FY2017. FOC is anticipated in 2024.”
Prior to responding to the RFI, at 1:00 PM on September 1st Stavatti Aerospace CEO Chris Beskar, President Jeff Lay and Director of Advanced Technology Stu Cart met with Mr. Dudley and ASC/XRSC representatives regarding the APT FoS requirement. The meeting included an overview of the APT FoS and T-X program by ASC/ARSC, as well as a briefing of the SM-47T and Stavatti Aerospace by the Stavatti team.
The Stavatti response proposed the SM-47T APT to succeed the T-38C Talon. The SM-47T is a new design, next generation supersonic Advanced Pilot Trainer developed by Stavatti as a privately sponsored, commercial venture to satisfy the global market for a T-38 Talon successor. The SM-47T is a variant of the SM-47 Super Machete and will be produced in two models: the single-seat SM-47S Air Defense Fighter and the two-seat tandem SM-47T. Currently under development and scheduled to enter Full Rate Production in 2016, the SM-47T will be powered by a single GEAE F414-GE-400 or F414 EPE afterburning turbofan. The design benefits from forward swept wings, all moving canard foreplanes, and all moving horizontal stabilizers. Of advanced alloy and composite construction, and featuring digital full-authority Fly-By-Wire, the SM-47T will be equipped with an advanced all-glass cockpit designed for HMDS interoperability. The SM-47T may feature the F/A-35 LAAD display to ensure JSF cockpit familiarity. The SM-47T will be a 5th generation solution for the APT FoS and DACT.
The present SM-47T development schedule concentrates upon engineering development through 2011 with prototype fabrication beginning in late 2011. The first SM-47 Prototype Air Vehicle (PAV) is expected to roll-out in 2012. With a total of six SM-47 PAVs scheduled for roll-out between 2013 and 2014, Stavatti anticipates receiving SM-47 production qualification in 2016, with specific stores qualification testing for the SM-47S variant occurring from 2015 through 2017.
With an LRIP target time-frame of 2016, the first 25 SM-47Ts could be delivered to the USAF as the T-X solution in 2017, followed by Full-Rate Production of the SM-47T beginning in 2017-2018 at 65 aircraft per year. Under this schedule, 350 SM-47T aircraft could be delivered and in-service by 2022. SM-47T per unit flyaway costs are projected at between $21 and $27 Million depending upon avionics, sensors and systems configuration.
The Stavatti APT Industry Team will include over 120 primary suppliers and subcontractors with major SM-47T suppliers including SDS International, L-3 Link Training & Simulation, General Electric Aircraft Engines, L-3 Display Systems, Martin Baker, Lockheed Martin-Radar Systems, Raytheon, General Dynamics AIS, General Dynamics Armament Systems and BAE Systems.
The Machete series, including the SM-27S/T Turboprop, SM-27J/L Turbofan and SM-47S/T Super Machete, is a family of modular COunter-INsurgency (COIN), Close Air Support (CAS), Forward Air Control (FAC), Advanced Trainer (AT), Light Weight Fighter (LWF), Lead-In Fighter (LIF), Air Defense Fighter (ADF), Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT) and Advanced Pilot Training (APT) aircraft. Stavatti Responds to LAAR CRFI

On August 28th Stavatti Aerospace submitted two responses to the Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance (LAAR) Capability Request for Information (CRFI). The two responses were submitted to Charles Vanderberg, Program Manager for ASC/XRS at WPAFB, OH.
The LAAR CRFI was released to obtain information from industry regarding potential solutions for the most cost-effective strategy for the acquisition of 100 fixed-wing Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance Aircraft with deliveries starting in 2012 and IOC beginning in 2013.
The Stavatti LAAR response included two separate submissions which proposed the SM-27T two-seat turboprop Machete aircraft and the SM-27L two-seat turbofan Machete aircraft respectively. The SM-27T submission focused upon the delivery of the first LAAR aircraft in Q4 of 2012 with all 100 aircraft delivered before the end of 2015. The SM-27L submission focused upon the delivery of the first LAAR aircraft in Q2 of 2013 and delivery of all 100 aircraft before the end of 2015.
The SM-27T is a two sea tandem COIN/CAS/FAC and Advanced Trainer aircraft. Offering a tactical radius of over 750 nm with internal fuel and able to carry a 6,500 lb warload, the SM-27S/T is a 21st Century A-1 Skyraider. The SM-27S/T is powered by a single 2,920 SHP PW127G Turboprop, is armed with a centerline mounted 30mm cannon and is heavily armored throughout. With a maximum level speed of 360 to 400 KTAS, the turboprop Machete has been designed specifically for COIN/CAS. Featuring an F-16 style, all-glass cockpit, the turboprop Machete will be produced in single seat (SM-27S) and two seat tandem (SM-27T) configurations. With in-flight refueling capability, integrated avionics and 9-G+ maneuverability in the clean-configuration, the turboprop Machete will be available in basic strike configurations without radar as well as more advanced variants that incorporate the AN/APG-67 radar and a comprehensive EW/Self Protection Suite. The SM-27S/T is scheduled to enter LRIP in 2012-2013.
The SM-27J/L Turbofan Machete is also armed with a 30mm cannon and can perform many missions of the A-10A, serving as a potential successor to the OA-10A in the FAC role. Powered by a single, non-afterburning GEAE F414 Derivative Turbofan offering over 14,500 lbs thrust, the SM-27J/L is a heavily armored, 9-G capable attack aircraft featuring in-flight refueling, an AN/APG-67 radar, integrated avionics and EW systems and a maximum external warload of 8,000 lbs. Able to operate from runways under 4,000 ft long with full external stores, the SM-27J/L will have a maximum level speed in excess of Mach 0.85 and a radius of 735 nm on internal fuel. Produced in single seat (SM-27J) and two-seat tandem (SM-27L) configurations, The SM-27J/L is scheduled for production in 2013-2014.

Stavatti Responds to the Iraq Trainer Aircraft RFI

On July 10th Stavatti Military Aerospace submitted a response to RFI Solicitation Number FA8617-E4-DSBU:Trainer Aircraft for the Iraq Air Force. The response proposed the SM-27T Machete Advanced Turboprop Trainer as a solution to the Iraq Trainer Aircraft requirement. The 25-page submission was sent to Ms. Robin Mosley at the 877 AESG/SYI, 1970 Monahan Way, Wright Patterson AFB, OH 45433.
The RFI called for the production and delivery to the Iraq Air Force of at least seven advanced trainer aircraft, an Instrument Flight Trainer (IFT), one year of Contractor Logistical Support (CLS), technical and training manuals, ground support equipment and spare parts. The seven new trainers will be added to an existing fleet of eight T-6A Texan II training aircraft presently based in Tikrit. The required award date for the contract is 2009 with delivery in 2010. The aircraft will prepare Iraqi flight academy pilots for future fighter aircraft training.
The new design SM-27T Machete Trainer will provide:
“Dedicated COIN and light CAS capability while serving as a high performance advanced trainer to instruct warfighters newly graduated from basic trainers. An ideal successor to turboprops including the EMB-314/ALX, T-6A/PC-9, PC-21 and KO-1, the SM-27S/T is a weapon system that can meets training needs without sacrificing combat capability.”
Additionally, the Stavatti response stated:
“The SM-27T is a clean sheet of paper, next-generation advanced turboprop training solution that will provide fast-jet, high-performance fighter orientation while maintaining commonality with the existing T-6A Texan II fleet. A significantly larger aircraft than the T-6A, the SM-27T is a trainer derived from a combat aircraft. As the need for Irregular Warfare solutions grow, the SM-27T can be readily converted from trainer to light attack roles with little modification, resulting in a true combat ready solution that significantly exceeds AT-6B capabilities.
Designed to meet advanced trainer needs for the next 40 years, the SM-27T is a worthy successor to the PC-9, T-6A, EMB-314 and other turboprop trainers designed and developed in the late 1970s. With a modern, F-16 inspired cockpit, in-flight refueling capability, 9-G maneuver capability with no external stores, self-start and desert operation design features and rugged, long-life construction, the SM-27T will provide greater value over its operating life than any other competing design.”
To address the acquisition and deployment timeframe, Stavatti stated:
“Stavatti is poised to prototype the SM-27T new design immediately. Under development since 2007, the current SM-27T configuration is ready to enter a Fast-Track Demonstration & Validation program using a “Skunk Works” style prototyping program to achieve SM-27T Prototype Air Vehicle first flight by December 2009 and FAA Certification/Military Qualification before January 2011. This will enable delivery of seven new, initial production aircraft to the Iraq Air Force by June 2011. It is likely that competing trainer aircraft will also incorporate mid-2011 delivery dates due to their existing backlog conditions.”

Machete Optimized to Satisfy Anticipated NorthCom Needs

On Wednesday, July 1st Stavatti Aerospace began optimizing the SM-27J/L Turbofan Machete and SM- 47S Super Machete variants to address anticipated USAF Northern Command (NorthCom) and U.S. Air National Guard (USANG) needs. About the Machete Originally intended as a next-generation attack and air defense export for U.S. allies requiring combat air- craft to replace OV-10s, A-37s, A-4s, F-5s and F-16As, the Machete series was developed around a plug- and-play architecture to comply with ITAR export limitations. The Machete series satisfies Counter- Insurgency (COIN), Close Air Support (CAS), Air Defense Fighter (ADF), and Advanced Trainer (AT) missions and the three Machete variants; the SM-27S/T Turboprop, SM-27J/L Turbofan, and the SM-47S/T Super Machete, share a common airframe core. Stavatti is developing domestic variants of the Turbofan and Super Machete as privately sponsored commercial initiatives.The Turbofan Machete will be ready for IOC by 2014/2015 and the Super Machete by 2015/2016. Both would satisfy potential NorthCom and USANG needs and fill the pending fighter gap.
Stavatti is designing a dedicated ASA variant of the Super Machete to prepare for the coming fighter gap between 2015 and 2017 when eight of the 11 USANG F-16 units currently flying Air Sovereignty Alert (ASA) missions reach their end of life. To address specific NorthCom and USANG needs in the 2015-2025 time-frame, the aircraft will benefit from a fully integrated domestic-oriented avionics, sensor, and EW suite that will include an AESA radar. Stavatti is considering the Northrop Grumman Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR). Originally designed to equip the F-16, quoting Northrop Grumman, “the SABR will offer an active electronically scanned multi- function array at significant cost savings.” The Super Machete ASA may also be equipped with the Northrop Grumman AN/AAQ-37 Electro-Optical Distributed Aperture System (EO DAS). This forward swept-wing, single-seat, highly maneuverable single-engine fighter is powered by the GEAE F414-GE-400. The high-performance multi-role aircraft can perform F-16 ASA missions at significantly lower operating and support costs. Unlike export-configured variants, the domestic version will feature signature reducing features including canted vertical stabilizers, a shielded engine compressor face, and export-restricted Radar Absorbent Materials (RAM) to significantly reduce aircraft Radar Cross Section (RCS). With a projected per unit flyaway cost in the $25 Million class, the first Super Machete ASAs could enter IOC by 2016. In support of the USAF need for an Advanced T-38 successor, Stavatti has submitted information regarding the two-seat tandem SM-47T Supersonic Trainer Super Machete variant in response to the USAF Advanced Pilot Training (APT) Family of Systems (FoS) RFI on April 30th, 2009.
As both NorthCom and USANG require dedicated fighters and multi-role aircraft for maritime surveillance, air patrol, and interdiction, Stavatti is developing a dedicated USANG variant of the SM-27J/L Turbofan Machete. This aircraft features a non-afterburning F414 derivative engine benefiting from a similar fuselage core, modular cockpit, air inlet system and nose/avionics bay that could provide NorthCom and USANG with a high subsonic, long-range, compact, and affordable CAS, SEAD, FAC, Interdiction, Air Patrol, andmari- time surveillance aircraft. The titanium winged and highly armored aircraft is equipped with a fixed 30mm cannon and eight external stores hardpoints. It can perform missions once satisfied by many classic aircraft including the A-10, A-4, A-6, A-7, F/A-18 and F-16. The Turbofan Machete USANG can be equipped with SABR and the AN/AAQ-37 and will feature export restricted avionics and sensor systems to provide leading edge continental air defense capability. SM-27IT Machete To perform the ISR mission, the extended wing SM-27IT will provide U-2 like operational capability using a common SM-27J core.
Chris Beskar Tours Sandia National Labs with AIAA TCM

On May 18-20th Stavatti CEO Chris Beskar toured Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico with the AIAA Technical Committee on Management (TCM). The meeting was hosted by Sandia National Laboratories as arranged by Stephen Rottler, Vice President for Weapons Engineering & Product Realization and Chief Engineer For Nuclear Weapons. On Monday the 18th the TCM met for dinner at Sandiago’s Mexican Grill located at the base of the Sandia Peak Tramway. On Tuesday the 19th the TCM held a full day work-session, meeting at Sandia’s Innova- tion Parking Office Center (IPOC)-Thunderbird Conference Room from 8:15 until 5:00 PM. Principal pre- sentations of the day included an overview briefing of Sandia National Laboratories by Steve Rottler. The briefing discussed Sandia‘s history and capabilities and lasted from 8:30 until 11:00 AM. Immediately fol- lowing lunch, the TCM held a held a focused topic discussion on Very Light Jets (VLJs) from 12:45 until 4:45. The VLJ discussion included a presentation by Edward Langoria, the Managing Director of Global Aviation, William G. Shira, Vice President of Marketing for Gulfstream Aerospace and Wilson Felder, Special Assistant to the Director of the FAA.
During the presentation a lessons-learned review of Eclipse Avia- tion, based in Albuquerque was conducted. Mr. Beskar was a lively participant in the discussion of Eclipse Aviation. Upon conclusion of the focused topic discussion, an introduction to the next meeting’s topic, Ethics In Engineering, was held. Following the meeting, TCM membership was transported to the Savoy Bar and Grill for dinner, which lasted until 8:30. During dinner Mr. Beskar discussed Stavatti industry teaming opportunities with Don Burch, Chief Program Manager for Spirit Aerosystems. On Wednesday the 20th the TCM met again at Sandia‘s IPOC and from 8:00 until 12:00 TCM business was addressed. As Awards Subcommittee Chairman for the TCM, Mr. Beskar provided a briefing regard- ing the 2009 Hap Arnold and Von Braun Awards for Excellence in Program Management. From 12:00 until 3:00 the TCM toured Sandia facilities including the Center for National Security and Arms Control (CNSAC) and the Z-Accelerator Facility. Due to travel arrangements Mr. Beskar left the meeting at 3:15, missing a tour of the Microelectronics and Systems Applications (MESA) facility. Mr. Beskar returned to Minnesota on the evening of the 20th.
A truly enjoyable meeting, Mr. Beskar had the opportunity to not only tour Sandia National Labs, but also have a first-hand look at Eclipse Aviation and their business model.A Senior Member of AIAA, Mr. Beskar has served on the TCM since 1999 as an active member. Mr. Beskar is currently the Chair of the TCM’s Awards Subcommittee.
Stavatti Announces New SM-282 VTOL ISR UAV Design

On Tuesday May 5th, Stavatti Aerospace announced the ongoing design of the SM-282, a new Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This portable UAV is intended for detecting IEDs in urban and non-urban settings, insurgent identification, monitoring troop and insurgent movements, tactical/field reconnaissance, and other ISR tasks.
The UAV consists of an aft-mounted high-aspect ratio wing, a forward-mounted high-aspect ratio canard, and a streamlined, elliptical toroidal planform lifting-body fuselage. Powered by a single, dorsally mounted 107-lb. thrust SWB-100 turbojet, the UAV features two 60-in diameter, 36-blade, contra-rotating tip-driven fans mounted in the fuselage perpendicular to the line of flight. These fans provide sufficient vertical thrust to enable VTOL operations at typical SM-282 gross weights. Driven by high-pressure air diverted from the SWB-100 turbojet, the UAV applies technologies pioneered by the Ryan XV-5 for reduced-risk VTOL while providing efficient, high-speed cruise.
The SWB-100 powerplant uses an electrically driven diverter system to drive the tip-driven fans during VTOL, and in hovering flight and provide forward thrust during cruise and conventional takeoffs and landings. The UAV features a graphite composite fuselage, wings, canard and empennage with a ventral mounted centerline vertical stabilizer and two wing-mounted outrigger stabilizers that serve as fairings for the main landing gear. With fixed landing gear, the UAV can operate from unprepared, forward locations and will use its VTOL capability or a runway for conventional takeoffs and landings in less than 325 ft. The UAV will have a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 261 lbs. including 111-lb. empty weight and 50- lb. payload. The UAV will feature a 35 KTAS stall speed, a 50-to-75 KTAS cruise speed, and a maximum level speed of 125 KTAS. Maximum range is 265 nm with maximum endurance greater than four hours. Designed to carry a ventrally mounted L-3 Sonoma Model 12 DS/TS 200 Long Range Imaging System, the UAV may be equipped with a variety of mission specific sensor packages including SAR and “Sniffer” CBN sampling & detection packages.
The powerplant uses batteries for system operation and self-start and runs on heavy fuel (JP-8). A GPS guided, autonomous, fly-by-wire system controls and monitors the vehicle through a Mobile Command/Control Station. Operation requires no specialized military operational skills. The platform will provide real-time video feed to the operator with data-link capability to provide real-time information to the Tactical Operation Center. Capable of remote control by radio frequency, the UAV will be operable with current systems including passive early detection systems, Vehicle Optic Sen- sor Systems, Counter Radio Electronic Warfare Systems, etc. Wings and canards are removable for transport. The SM-282 UAV is designed for daily operation in harsh desert, arctic, maritime, and tropical environments for five years, equivalent to a 10,000 hour airframe life.
Stavatti Response to USAF Advanced Pilot Training (APT) RFI

On Thursday, April 30th, Stavatti Aerospace submitted a 47-page formal response to the Advanced Pilot Training Family of Systems Program Request for Information issued by the USAF-Aeronautical Systems Center, ASC/XRS, 2275 D Street, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7224. The Stavatti response proposed the SM-47T APT to succeed the T-38C Talon. The SM-47T is a new design, next generation supersonic Advanced Pilot Trainer developed by Stavatti as a privately spon- sored, commercial venture to satisfy the global market for a T-38 Talon successor in the 2017 time-frame.
The SM-47T is a variant of the SM-47 Super Machete and will be produced in two models: the single-seat SM-47S Air Defense Fighter and the two-seat tandem SM-47T. Currently under development and sched- uled to enter Full Rate Production in 2016, the SM-47T will be powered by a single GEAE F414-GE-400 EDE afterburning turbofan. The design benefits from forward swept wings, all moving canard foreplanes, and all moving horizontal stabilizers. Of advanced alloy and composite construction, and featuring digital full-authority Fly-By-Wire, the SM-47T will be equipped with an advanced all-glass cockpit designed for HMDS interoperability. The SM-47T is a practical solution for APT and DACT, providing 5th generation fighter capability at 4th generation costs. Created in-house by Stavatti, these X-Plane models are an accurate, officially endorsed representation of Machete aircraft for use by the X-Plane community. The models are hosted on the Stavatti corporate website and are available for free download from a dedicated Machete X-Plane page. Downloads are available for non- commercial use only. Laminar Research is a software company based in Columbia, South Carolina. Chris Beskar, Minicon 44 Science Programming Panelist

On Friday, April 10th, Chris Beskar was a featured panelist, discussing Current Trends in Science at the 44th annual Minicon in Bloomington, Minnesota. Chris, along with fellow scientists including Seth Shostak, an astronomer at the SETI institute, discussed their views on current hot topics in the scientific community. Chris introduced his views on quantum and photonic computing, reusable launch vehicles, interplanetary spacecraft, and the importance of reindustrializing the United States in the 21st century. At a subsequent panel the following Saturday evening, Chris discussed the future of commercial space transport, space fighters and interstellar spacecraft. The talk was well received by audience members who lingered to ask questions and examine the graphics provided as part of the presentation.

On April 6th, Stavatti CEO Chris Beskar met with senior leaders of Hydro Lance Engineering, Inc. including Robert Price, Chairman & Chief Engineer, and Lowell “Deake” Hargrave, President & CEO. Hydro Lance Engineering Incorporated (HLE) is a leading-edge technology enterprise engaged in the design of marine vessels and hybrid green energy generation and conservation technologies. HEL’s H.A.R.T.H. technology is a radical paradigm shift in the field of ocean-going vessel design, which allows for super-stable, high-speed vehicles in virtually all sea environments. HEL’s new Two-Fold Fuel (TFF) program is a facet of Hydro Lance’s overall energy strategy, which includes novel methods of energy recovery from drained oil fields.
The meeting with HEL focused upon a discussion of the Two-Fold Fuel program as well as the H.A.R.T.H technology as applied to rapid ferries, high-speed littoral vessels, ocean-going container ships and match speed aircraft carriers. Discussions were held regarding the role of Stavatti Heavy Industries, Ltd. as a potential licensee of H.A.R.T.H. technology for the purpose of manufacturing a wide variety of marine vessels, including next generation, high-speed container ships, supertankers, and naval vessels. As a developer of next generation military aircraft, Stavatti is keenly interested in the joint development of a Match Speed Aircraft Carrier (MSAC) populated with Stavatti aircraft. As a component of Stavatti Naval Systems, a division of Stavatti Marine, the HEL MSAC will re-introduce the escort carrier as a medium tonnage, high speed weapon system capable of carrying up to 60 aircraft with a deck approximately one-half the size of current Nimitz class ships. With operational speeds of 130 knots, the MSAC will permit zero-field length landing of high performance naval aircraft, enabling a compact carrier to project significant air power.
Discussions regarding the integration of Stavatti Low Observables (LO) technology, including proprietary Active Low Observables (ALO) into future HEL naval vessels transpired as did a partnership with Stavatti in the conversion of retired Boeing 727, Lockheed L-1011 and McDonnell Douglas DC-9s/DC-10s to HEL high speed ferries. As an industry partner in green, reusable energy, discussions regarding energy technologies beyond TTF transpired. Deployment of SolidWorks Premium as PLM/CAD Solution

On Monday April 6th Stavatti began deployment of SolidWorks 2009 Premium as Stavatti’s primary PLM/CAD solution. SolidWorks 2009, a product of Dassault Systems SolidWorks Corp., was selected to compliment currently fielded Stavatti CAD solutions and serve as a support element to CAD performed using CATIA workstations. Although Dassault Systems CATIA will serve as the principal CAD solution for future aircraft design and development, SolidWorks 2009 will provide a powerful yet economical CAD system to address a majority of engineering design needs.
Over the past 15 years, Stavatti has evaluated a wide variety of CAD and more recently PLM/CAD systems to satisfy aerospace vehicle design needs including CATIA, SolidWorks, Pro-E, Unigraphics, Cobalt, Vectorworks, Autocad, etc., with CATIA being selected as the most appropriate for our engineering design needs. Recent advancements in the SolidWorks program, fostered in-part with the acquisition of Solid- works by Dassault Systems, has resulted in a CAD solution which Stavatti perceives can satisfy a majority of design needs which three years ago could only be addressed by CATIA. Using a joint CATIA- SolidWorks 2009 solution, it is predicted that approximately 75% of all future design work will be performed using SolidWorks with 25% being performed using CATIA and other solutions.
The first Stavatti aerospace vehicle to be engineered primarily using SolidWorks Premium will be the SM-282 VTOL ISR UAV. Stavatti will begin conducting approximately all new Machete series design work, including CAD as well as a large portion of FEA and CFD, using SolidWorks Premium. The SC-100, now being designed for Skytruck, Inc. will also benefit from SolidWorks Premium.

On Monday March 30th, Stavatti CEO Chris Beskar met with Hybrid Technology General Manager Norman Giebeler. Chris and Norman discussed Hybrid‘s industry partnership with Stavatti to manufacture high performance prototype and production machined components for landing gear, fuselage, wing, and empennage assemblies. The meeting also covered high-performance pumps and next generation general aviation aircraft turbine development and production.
Hybrid Technology is based in San Bernardino, California, and designs, develops, and manufactures Sure Lock high pressure cement heads for the oil and gas drilling industry. In addition, Hybrid serves as a leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance machined components including landing gear assemblies, subsystems and components for the aerospace industry. Stavatti Announces Development of ISR Machete

On Wednesday, March 25th, Stavatti Aerospace announced development of new Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) variants of the Machete turbofan and turboprop. The new aircraft are optimized for manned or unmanned high-altitude, extended endurance intelligence gathering. The ISR Machete will provide continuous day or night, high altitude stand-off surveillance. Inspired by an anticipated need for a low-cost, export-approved ISR platform capable of carrying a 3,000 lb. sensor package above 60,000 ft., development began in late April 2009 and culminated with the SM- 27IP (ISR turboprop) and SM-27IT (ISR turbofan).
Based on the standard Machete airframe, they feature longer, 90-ft. wingspans, 479-sq. ft. wing areas, and an aspect ratio of 16.9. Ventral vertical stabilizer fins provide yaw stability. Long-span wings and enhanced FBW software provide pitch control. The ISR Machetes can operate from 3,000-ft. runways. They are equipped with retractable outrigger landing gear, increased internal fuel capacity (up to 8,000 lbs.), a dedicated ISR sensor suite, and a ventral fuselage sensor pod equipped with integrated SAR/GMTI, FLIR, EO Camera and Laser designator. To reduce empty weight, the aircraft are not equipped with internal cannon or discrete armor, however, they may be fitted with up to 12 external stores stations to carry up to 3,000 lbs.
The ISR turboprop Machete is based on the SM-27S and is powered by a PW127G. With a 3,360 lb sensor payload, maximum takeoff weight is approximately 22,000 lbs. With a projected service ceiling in excess of 50,000 ft, the aircraft will have a maximum level speed of nearly 340 KTAS, a range of 5,000 nm on internal fuel and a maximum endurance of over 24 hours. The aircraft will be produced in a single-seat configuration for manned flights in excess of 14 hours, as well as unmanned/ autonomous configurations. Unmanned versions will have up to 500 lbs. of additional sensor payload and permit missions lasting longer than 24 hours. The ISR turbofan Machete is derived from the SM-27J and is powered by a non-afterburning F414 featuring an enhanced performance long chord blisk fan. With a 3,000 lb sensor payload, aircraft maximum takeoff weight is predicted at 23,365 lbs.
Offering performance similar to the U-2S, the SM-27IT will have a service ceiling in excess of 70,000 ft, a maximum level speed greater than 550 KTAS and a range of 4,700 nm. The manned SM-27IT will have an endurance greater than 13 hours and provisions to support a single pilot equipped with a full pressure suit for sustained flight operations above 50,000 ft. The unmanned/autonomous SM-27IT will offer up to 750 lbs of additional sensor payload and enable a mission endurance of more than 14 hours. Stavatti anticipates prototype construction coinciding with SM-27S and SM-27J development.

Release of New Machete Series Configuration

On Monday, March 2nd, Stavatti Aerospace released the new the configuration for the Machete family of next generation, single engine Light Attack, Lightweight Fighter and Advanced Trainer aircraft. The New Machete configuration was “Frozen” on Friday, February 27th. Marking the completion of a 15-month design improvement effort, the Machete program is now entering the detail design phase. In January 2008 Stavatti initiated a design improvement effort to significantly enhance overall Machete performance, capabilities and interoperability per recommendations of current warfighters and potential systems-users alike. Tailored to address the specific needs of international customers while ensuring intelligent integration into domestic force structure, the new Machete configuration is optimized to excel at tomorrow’s CAS mission.
Building upon the baseline Machete configuration of 2007, the SM-27 Turboprop and Turbofan variants experienced a dramatic improvement in range, endurance and warload. Wingspan of the SM-27 models increased from 43 ft to 50 ft, resulting in 62 sq ft of additional wing area and two additional external stores hardpoints. The SM-27 fuselage length was lengthened by approximately five ft, with overall aircraft height increasing by nine inches. Maximum internal fuel of the SM-27S/T was increased from 2,600 lbs to 5,000 lbs while the internal fuel capacity of the SM-27J/L rose to 6,000 lbs. External warload of the SM- 27S/T increased from 5,000 to 6,500 lbs. SM-27J/L warload with maximum internal fuel likewise increased to 8,500 lbs. Retaining the proven PW127G powerplant, the propeller diameter of the SM-27S/T turboprop was increased to 120 in.
To improve performance at all altitudes while assuring a uniform supportability across the turbofan Machete line, the original SM-27J/L PW308C powerplant was replaced by a single non- afterburning derivative of the GEAE F414-GE-400. Resulting in an aircraft with extraordinary short field and transonic cruise performance, maximum level speed of the SM-27J/L was increased to over Mach 0.87 while tactical radius on internal fuel increased to 735 nm. To broaden mission capability, the ventral mounted centerline 30mm GAU-13/A cannon was made standard across the SM-27 line, with provisions for 675 rds of ammunition in single seat and 470 rds in two seat tandem variants. All domestic and NATO export variants of the SM-27 series will benefit from a comprehensive EW suite that includes the AN/ALQ-211(V)4 AIDEWS, the AN/ALQ-165 ASPJ and up to 14 AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispensers.
Derived from the SM-27J/L the SM-47S/T Super Machete was dramatically improved to compete head-to- head with the JAS-39C Gripen in the Air Defense Fighter role while satisfying future Advanced Pilot Training/T-38C successor requirements. Powered by a single GEAE F414-GE-400 or F414 EDE, the SM- 47S/T internal fuel load has been increased to 7,250 lbs corresponding to a mission radius of 760 nm. With an external warload of 11,000 lbs and a maximum level speed in excess of Mach 1.8, the SM-47S/T will be an extremely capable light-weight fighter. SM-47S/T wingspan was increased from 28 ft to 36 ft, with gross wing area growing by 130 sq ft. Total external hardpoints were increased from six to eight, while a nose-mounted 20mm M61A2 Vulcan cannon with 1,000 rds becoming the standard fixed internal armament for the SM-47S. Standard avionics include the AN/APG-67(V4) multi-mode radar with ASPIS serving as the base-line self-protection suite. All variants of the Machete family have seen notable improvements including the addition of standard probe-and-drogue in-flight refueling probes, an increase in avionics and sensors growth volume and the selection of new, fully integrated self-protection systems.
Most apparent, however, is a rethinking of the Machete cockpit to include reclined ejection seats, Block 60 F-16 style flight and throttle grips and an all- glass cockpit featuring five 6 x 8 in L3 displays for the forward crewstation and six 6 x 8 in L-3 displays in the aft cockpit of two seat models. Designed to benefit from HMDs or HUDs per customer requirements, the new Machete cockpit may also feature the L3 Large Area Avionics Display (LAAD) to ensure JSF similarity in the APT role. Engineered with modularity in-mind, single and two seat cockpit modules are inter- changeable between same variant type aircraft for enhanced cost savings and mission-readiness. Machete series detail design is now underway. Stavatti anticipates prototype construction of the SM- 27S/T/J/L to begin in the first quarter of 2010 with prototype assembly of the SM-47S/T scheduled to begin in 2011.
The Machete series, including the SM-27S/T Turboprop, SM-27J/L Turbofan and SM-47S/T Super Machete, is a family of modular COunter-INsurgency (COIN), Close Air Support (CAS), Forward Air Con- trol (FAC), Advanced Trainer (AT), Lightweight Fighter (LWF), Lead-In Fighter (LIF), Air Defense Fighter (ADF), Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT) and Advanced Pilot Training (APT) aircraft. Developed as a privately sponsored, corporate initiative to satisfy anticipated COIN/CAS and LWF/APT needs, the Machete will provide efficient, highly survivable warfighter air support.
Stavatti Releases New Machete Master Arrangement Drawings

On January 13th Stavatti Aerospace released the latest Master Arrangement Drawings for the Machete series of COIN, CAS, FAC, ADF and AT aircraft, including the SM-27S/T Turboprop Machete, SM-27J/L Turbofan Machete and SM-47S/T Super Machete. The Master Arrangement Drawings include external arrangement profile and elevation drawings of each variant of the Machete aircraft including all cross- sections associated with the aircraft fuselage and secondary airframe structures, as well as drawings of wing, canard and empennage standard airfoil sections. The Master Arrangement Drawings serve as the primary repository for Machete aircraft arrangement, layout and external physical configuration.
The Master Arrangement Drawings include both ANSI F size 2-D prints as well as 3D SolidWorks Premium models of the exterior aircraft arrangement. The Machete family Master Arrangement Drawings will be used in the detailed design of the Machete airframe structure while also serving as the primary source for Machete General Arrangement Drawings/3-View drawings. The Master Arrangement Drawings contain all information necessary to define the aircraft physical arrangement/configuration and are the primary source for use in modeling Machete aircraft for the purposes of wind tunnel model fabrication, full-scale mockup construction and the creation of desktop models, model kits and radio-control model aircraft. Completion of Skytruck SC-100 Business Plan

On Friday January 9th Stavatti CEO Chris Beskar completed the Skytruck SC-100 Business Plan and submitted the plan to the Skytruck Board of Directors for approval and distribution. The Business Plan focuses upon the design, development, prototyping, flight test, FAA Certification, Mass Production and Contractor Logistical Support of the SC-100 Twin Turboprop Utility Transport. The Development Program as outlined within the Business Plan calls for a $300 Million, 36-Month development effort to result in the production of up to 100 SC-100 aircraft annually for 10 to 15 years beginning in the 2013/2014 time-frame. Skytruck, Inc. projects the direct employment of over 1,500 individuals in support of SC-100 production. Designed to serve as a 3rd level cargo aircraft for the transport of standardized containers, the SC-100 will be a critical air asset that will satisfy tomorrow‘s commercial and military utility transport needs.

Stavatti Introduces New Machete Cockpit Concepts

On Monday, November 24th Stavatti Aerospace released the first concept models of the new cockpit configuration for the Machete series of aircraft. The new cockpit will be applied to all models of the Machete, with a conceptually similar cockpit being designed for the SM-26 Sleek series. Stavatti began the design of a new cockpit layout following discussions held at WPAFB in Dayton, Ohio earlier in the month.
Borrowing from the F-16 cockpit configuration, the new Machete cockpits will feature reclined crew seats to improve pilot comfort and enhance G-tolerance. The reclined seating allows all two-seat tandem Machetes to feature a stepped cockpit configuration. Providing a significant improvement in rear crew-station forward visibility, aft-seated crewmembers will now be able to see over-the-head of the front seat occupant. This improved visibility will provide Machete flight instructors with greater for- ward visibility than flight instructors for the T-6A, PC-9, F-16B/D and T-38. To ensure armed services commonality, the new turboprop Machetes will feature the Martin Baker MKUS16L ejection seat used in the T-6A while turbofan and Super Machetes will use the Martin Baker MK16E seat used by the F/A-25 JSF. All Machetes will feature F-16C style flight and throttle grips as produced by Mason Electric, as well as F-16 based rudder pedals. Borrowing extensively from the F-16C/D and F/A-18E/F, to increase commonality while reducing NRE costs the Machete will employ as multiple Viper and Super Hornet cockpit control and crew interface elements.
To improve situational awareness, the new Machete cockpit will benefit from L-3 Display System‘s PRISM integrated cockpit. The new cockpit will feature five L-3 Actiview 104P 6” x 8” Active Matrix LCDs in the forward crewstation and six L-3 Actiview 104P 6” x 8” Active Matrix LCDs in the aft crewstation. The pilot’s primary visual flight reference instrument will be a CMC Electronics Night Hawk HUD or Sparrow Hawk HUD or a Vision Systems International Helmet Mounted Display (HMD). A radical departure from the original Machete concept, the new cockpits offer an all-glass, fully integrated workplace environment. Regarded as a foundation in the Machete family of combat and training aircraft, the new Sleek series will employ a Machete inspired cockpit featuring reclined seats, a HOTAS style flight and throttle grip and an all-glass, integrated cockpit.
Stavatti Enters into Formal Relationship with CMC Electronics

On November 18th Stavatti Aerospace entered into a formal business relationship with CMC Electronics Aurora, Inc. of Sugar Grove, IL. CMC Electronics designs and produces leading technology electronics products for the aviation and global position markets. The manufacturer of the Sparrow Hawk and Night Hawk Head Up Display (HUD) systems, CMC Electronics is a primary supplier of primary and secondary display systems for military fast jets and turboprop trainers. Stavatti Aerospace has selected of the Night Hawk HUD as one of three primary Visual Flight Reference instruments that customers will be able to choose for the Machete family of next generation COIN/CAS/ADF aircraft.
Stavatti is also exploring the selection of the CMC Cockpit 4000 as a standard integrated cockpit display suite for the Machete family. Stavatti and CMC have begun a formal exchange of engineering data to begin the integration of CMC display systems into the Machete design. Stavatti Aerospace President Jeffrey E. Stavatti Meeting with the Air Force Security Assistance Center

On Wednesday, November 16th Stavatti representatives Jeffrey E. Lay, Stuart E. Cart and Christopher R. Beskar met with Walter Benford, Command Country Manager for BG, ID, MF, NP, PI and VS with the Air Force Security Assistance Center located in Building 210, WPAFB. During the meeting Stavatti representatives provided a briefing to Mr. Benford regarding the Machete series of next generation turboprop and turbofan Close Air Support/Counter-Insurgency aircraft. The discussions focused upon the Machete series as a potential solution for South East Asia/Pacific Rim COIN, CAS and Advanced Trainer aircraft needs with specific emphasis being placed upon satisfying the future needs of Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
During the meeting with Mr. Benford the utility of the Machete series was realized and how it will offer significantly greater capability than the AT-6 Texan II. Furthermore, it appears that the Machete series could satisfy a host of needs throughout the Pacific Rim, be them a replacement to the OV-10 Bronco (SM- 27S/T Turboprop Machete), a replacement to the BAe Hawk (SM-27J/L Turbofan Machete) or a replacement/alternative to the F-5 and F-16 (SM-47S/T Super Machete). Upon conclusion of the meeting, Stavatti representatives were also introduced to Richard E. Amos, Director-Pacific Branch, Air Force Security Assistance Center.

Chris Beskar Selected To Design Skytruck’s Small Cargo Aircraft

On Wednesday, January 16th Stavatti CEO Chris Beskar was selected to serve as the Chief Designer for a new Small Cargo Aircraft that will be developed and produced by Skytruck, Inc. of New Orleans, Louisiana. Skytruck, Inc. is a new, privately held aircraft manufacturer incorporated in January 2008 focused on the design, production and support of next generation air cargo aircraft. Skytruck, Inc. was founded by President & Chairman William G. Rheams and CEO Edward J. Peak. The Small Cargo Aircraft is the brainchild of William Rheams and will be the first project of Skytruck, Inc.
The Small Cargo Aircraft (SCA) will be a twin-engine turboprop utility transport that will combine extraordinary short field performance with a competitive cruise speed and transcontinental range to solve tomorrow’s commercial and military transport needs. A trail-blazer that opens up new markets, the SCA will represent the first 3rd level cargo aircraft with a drop-down cargo ramp capable of operating from considerably short, unprepared airstrips worldwide, making operations from hard-to-reach regions of Africa, Asia and South America practical. A series that has the potential of becoming a highly respected cargo airliner/airlifter, the SC-100 was conceived in the spirit of the DC-3/C-47 that saw production numbers of over 10,000 units. Designed to serve as a 3rd level cargo aircraft for the transport of standardized containers, the SCA will capable of transporting payloads of more than three tons over 1,000 nm at a cruise speed of approximately 300 KTAS.
A rugged, all-metal aircraft that benefits from advanced manufacturing technologies including Friction Stir Welding, the SCA will be designed to operate from unprepared short fields. Preliminary SCA conceptual design has focused upon two design approaches including a conventional all-metal, twin engine arrangement with an aft fuselage drop-down cargo ramp and an advanced configuration featuring composite NASA Langley inspired Hyper-Elliptic Cambered Span (HECS) wings and canard mounted pusher engines. The SCA will be a product of Skytruck, Inc. of New Orleans, Louisiana. Stavatti Aerospace will serve as a member of the Skytruck SCA Industry Team, providing engineering design and development support.

Stavatti Selects GEAE F414 To Power New Turbofan Machetes

On November 16th Stavatti Military Aerospace selected the F414 family of turbofans to power the New Turbofan Machete variants. A product of General Electric Aircraft Engines (GEAE) the F414 is an evolu- tion of the proven F404 series of afterburning and non-afterburning turbofan engines. In October 2007 Stavatti Aerospace began a series of improvements to the Machete family of aircraft to arrive at a more capable aircraft which will readily address 21st century COIN/CAS/ADF needs. These improvements not only include an increase in aircraft physical dimensions and operational weights, but also overall power and thrust requirements. While Stavatti elected to retain the PW127G to power the SM-27S/T, on November 16th it was decided that the New Turbofan Machete and Super Machete required proven powerplants of greater thrust which offer superior high-altitude performance. Borrowing from the original SM-47 powerplant configuration, Stavatti elected to employ GEAE F414 engines in both the new configurations of the SM-27J/L Turbofan Machete and the SM-47S/T Super Machete. The original “pre-November 2007” SM-27J/L was to be powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308C turbofan delivering 7,002 lbs static thrust. A highly efficient turbofan which also powers the Das- sault Falcon 2000EX, the PW308C was an ideal COTS choice to ensure long loiter times and efficient cruise. While engineering the improved SM-27J/L it was determined that the PW308C powered aircraft may be underpowered. To maintain comonality with the SM-47, it was elected to reconfigure the SM- 27J/L to employ a non-afterburning F414 derivative which will provide nearly 15,000 lbs static thrust. Although consuming more fuel than the PW308C, the F414 will enable the SM-27J/L to operate from extremely short fields while out accelerating, out-climbing and out-running any aircraft in its class while carrying a significant external stores load. As the F414 is currently produced only in afterburning configu- rations, the SM-27J/L powerplant will be engineered specifically by GEAE for the Turbofan Machete. The original “pre-November 2007” SM-47 was to be powered by a non-afterburning GEAE F414. Envi- sioned a successor to the F-5 and F-16A and a direct competitor to the JAS 39 Gripen, it was decided that the New Super Machete needed to not only operate within the same weight class as the JAS 39, but also offer a higher thrust-to-weight ratio while benefiting from a reliable, proven powerplant. To maintain continuity within the jet Machete families, Stavatti chose an afterburning GEAE F414-GE-400 to power the SM-47. The powerplant for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the F414-GE-400 will provide over 22,000 lbs of thrust and enable a SM-47 in the ADF configuration to achieve an over-unity thrust-to-weight ratio. Bene- fiting from the proven reliability of the F/A-18E/F, the SM-47 will be designed to carry half the internal fuel of the F/A-18E while delivering nearly 2/3rds the warload at a greater maximum level speed. Stavatti Responds to Iraq Counter-Insurgency (COIN) RFI

On May 25th Stavatti Military Aerospace submitted a response to Request For Information (RFI) Solicita- tion Number FA8617-07-R-0001: Iraq Counter-Insurgency (COIN) Aircraft. The response contained infor- mation related to the SM-27S/T Turboprop Machete. The 50 page submission was sent by Stavatti Aero- space to Christopher Kirbabas at the 337th Aeronautical Systems Group (AESG), 664 AESS/PK, Building 11A, Room 201-I, 1970 Monahan Way, Wright Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7211, TEL: 937-904-4314. The Stavatti RFI response emphasized that the SM-27 Machete is the appropriate solution for the Iraq COIN Aircraft Requirement stating: “The Machete program is focused upon the production of the most highly effective COIN platform of our era. In so doing, the Machete has evolved into satisfying what is referred to as SUPER COIN: A Counter-Insurgency Aircraft capable of performing a host of Close Air Support missions while aptly suitable as an advanced trainer and lead-in fighter. SUPER COIN by nature concentrates upon the delivery of high performance, precision guided ordinance to discrete insurgent targets while maintaining the capability to thwart the air defenses of sophisticated, entrenched adversaries.
Designed from the onset to bridge OA-10C capabilities, the Machete SUPER COIN will be a highly armored, extremely well equipped weapon system armed with a 30mm can- non and optimized for exemplary low level maneuvering and handling. The SM-27 is the only new aircraft created specifically for the COIN mission… Of unique configuration, The SM-27 will be the only new attack/trainer aircraft to be made available in either turboprop or turbofan configurations, offering a stunning expanse of flight envelope within a com- mon, interchangeable airframe. To satisfy the specific mission needs of the Iraqi COIN Aircraft solicitation, Stavatti is pro- posing the SM-27S/T Machete Turboprop. Additionally to satisfy the specific requirements of the said solicitation, Stavatti will also propose the SM-27 IQ Machete Turboprop, which is a variant of the SM-27S/T configured specifically for the Iraqi COIN requirement.” The Stavatti response was submitted with Stavatti serving as program Prime Contractor and primary ven- dor for the provision of Contractor Logistical Support (CLS). The Machete Program Team as proposed consists of over 130 Industry Team Members committed to the success of the Machete program.
